I recently began reading in the last year, the works of Elizabeth Moon. I looked in Borders book store and found Elizabeth Moon’s earlier series with protagonist Heris Serrano (Hunting Party, Sporting Chance, and Winning Colors) all bound into one edition. I found it too daunting to sit down and absorb it on the typical subway commute. Instead, I opted to pick up the series Vatta’s War beginning with the first book Trading In Danger. What a treat I was in for! If you are a fan of the Honor Harrington series of books by David Weber (featuring a female protagonist in command) then you will love these books.

The main protagonist of this book, Kylara Vatta, has been forced to resign her commission as a cadet of the Slotter Key Space forces as the result of being duped by another cadet. This sets off a chain of events that has her uniting and leading a rag tag force against the murderous space pirate, known as Gammis Turek. She has a personal vendetta to settle with Mr. Turek in addition to him being a threat to the galaxy!!

I have personally read all of the books in the series and found one more exciting than the next. Each book chronicles the adventures of Vatta and her crew and the resources she must gain, both through earning the loyalty of her shipmates and building a fleet of her own. She must use all her military tactics and guile to stop the pirate invasion that only she can prevent, but of course time is running out.

There are five books in the series: Trading in Danger, Marque and Reprisal, Engaging the Enemy, Command Decision, and Victory Conditions. Pick them up… they are well worth the read!
