Well after years on the draft board and in tests, Earth’s first officially authorized flying car has arrived…you might need to extend your driveway.

You may have seen some news clips on this or heard a rumor, but this not a joke. I almost wish it was though. People are bad enough on the highway, but I guess it was inevitable. It will definitely make police chases interesting.

Below is an image from the Terrafugia Facebook page…

Terrafugia (latin for “escape from land”) has created a car that turns into a small passenger plane and can fit in the average garage. The car is being called the Transition® by Terrafugia. It has been tested on the road and air and has been approved for distribution starting sometime in late 2011 to early 2012, just in time for the end of the world!

Some of the specs from the the Terrafugia website:
____________
Cruise: 100 kts (115 mph)
Range: 400nm (460 mi)
Takeoff over 50′ obstacle: 1700′ Fuel burn: 5 gph
Fuel tank: 20 gallons
Useful Load: 430 lbs
On road: 30 mpg, highway speeds
____________

Price is approximately $194,000 dollars, but you can reserve one now for only $10,000. I already put some money aside for mine (only $9,874 more to go). I figure at the very least it would be great to crop dust my .0015 acres.

There is a major downside however that you should be aware of:

  • It’s ONLY a two seater (such a bummer for Han, Chewie, Luke and Leia)
  • It does not have a flux capacitor
  • It has no advanced weaponry
  • It is not submersible
  • It can’t escape Earth’s gravity
  • There are no optional shields
  • It may remind you of the Imperial Shuttle

Oh well, you can’t have it all I guess…
