This Tuesday’s release of Lost: The Complete Sixth and Final Season brings another successful science fiction franchise to a close. The series started with quite a pop-culture blast in the first Season and somehow kept that steam running along for an additional 5 seasons. Although it experienced a severe drop off in ratings, the show was allowed to continue and grow, allowing it to eventually garner a stable fan base. This single volume release is also being accompanied by Lost: The Complete Collection [Blu-ray] which allows the entire series to be available for the first time as a box set. If you are unfamiliar with the series, it revolves around survivors of a plane crash (Oceanic Air Flight 815 – traveling from Australia to Los Angeles) that find themselves awakening on an island they originally believe to be deserted, immediately after a explosive plane crash. As the series progressed, the group faced their deepest fears and also found their hidden strengths. This series was as much a story of survival as it was of fantasy, and this really came out as a result of strong casting, and great visuals. The storyline was well written, but it had its ups and downs, as with any series.

The main cast of characters was relatively stable, but the series did not hold back in killing major characters for the sake of a good storyline. New characters were frequently added and removed throughout the series to keep the stories fresh, but this was no Gilligan’s Island of humorous cameos. This tale of castaways had depth, and often frightening results. As you watch this series you will definitely find yourself as frustrated as the castaways sometimes, but that is what makes this a cult phenomenon.

This is a show that offered an original perspective on the human condition and offers a thoroughly enjoyable science fiction/fantasy adventure that will keep you guessing and intrigued until the mind blowing end.
