Fringe: The Complete Second Season is being released on Blu-Ray and DVD today.

Fringe is an excellent Science Fiction based drama currently airing on FOX. It was initially created by J. J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who collectively have written, created or been involved in several genre classics such as Alias, Lost, Armageddon, Star Trek (2009), The Island, Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Eagle Eye. Although the involvement of any of the original creators past the first season seems to have declined, the show has actually picked up fans.

The show had a pretty strong beginning and really has not slowed down. When it first launched, many early reviewers were quick to compare it to the X-Files or Twilight Zone. While there may have been some truth to that, the show really has developed into its own niche.

The story revolves around Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), a FBI Special Agent who is assigned to a department that specializes in bizarre scientific studies called the Fringe Division. Olivia is a bright Agent who is driven to find answers to the many unsolved cases, as well as newly reported cases, that have just been left unresolved or ignored. While comparatively similar to Agent Mulder from the X-Files, instead of having an underlying tone of extraterrestrial involvement, this show aims to identify scientific (and fantasy) explanations. In reality her character is really more of a cross between Mulder and Scully, in that she is a skeptic, but does not deny what she sees. This is due in part to her own paranormal history, which is revealed more in Season 2.

Season 1 is all about Character Development. From the very first episode we learn in depth details on what makes each character tick and also the main role they serve in the storyline. The primary character Olivia Dunham, has a rough start with losing her Partner (who is also someone she is romantically involved with). This incident serves as the catalyst for her involvement in the Fringe Program and sparks her relationship with her new allies, Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his son Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson).

Walter and Peter are an extremely intelligent father/son duo who play to the typical “so much alike, yet very distant in principles” stereotype. However, this duo is not typical at all and this dynamic also adds a lot of comic relief to an otherwise serious drama. Walter is a formerly imprisoned and brilliant scientist who has really been written off as insane (even by his own son), while Peter seems to have a knack for getting himself out of (and very often into) tight situations.

Season 2 has had a very heavy focus in alternate dimensions and the paranormal. This season has shown that this show is more than just another carbon copy. The show has taken the often used science fiction premise to a new level by creating an entire invasion plot, complete with alternate versions of the main characters, and adding a intense level of drama and suspense that keeps the viewer wanting more. To top it off, Season 2 has a surprise and amazing appearance from Leonard Nimoy in a pivotal role.

The series is very well acted and as crazy as it may seem to say this, I think it has a very believable storyline, at least from a science fiction standpoint.

If you are not familiar with the series, now is a good chance to catch up. The third season of Fringe is set to premiere September 23, 2010.
