Boneshaker – SciFi Book Review

If you are looking for a good read then look no further. You will want to read Boneshaker by Cherie Priest.

Boneshaker has contained within its pages steam punk goodness, airships, zombies, and an array of protagonists that will stand out in your memory as fantastic. It starts out in the backdrop of 19th century Seattle, with a young boy set with the intention to clear his despised father’s name. (His father was a mad scientist who invented the “Boneshaker” which destroyed the city they lived in and unwittingly released a gas that turned a percentage of the populace into zombies.) The survivors of the Boneshaker walled up the zombie ridden city and no one goes in or out. The boy runs away to carry out his quest. His mother (the protagonist of the story) goes after him to rescue her son from the terrors within its crumbling walls.

This novel won the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel and was also nominated for both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award.   I had the privilege of phone interviewing the author Ms. Priest in April 2010.   I found her to be soft spoken, humble, and gifted in terms of her craft.   It also seems this novel will be the seminal book to start a series called “The Clockwork Century”.   You really have to check this book out.   It is a worthy addition to any true science fiction reader’s collection!
