It has been a long wait for fans and has even inspired a 2007 Bionic Woman TV remake starring Michelle Ryan in its wake, but thankfully the original 1976 The Bionic Woman TV Series will finally be available starting with the first season this Tuesday October 19th.

“She can run faster than 60 mph, bend massive steel bars, jump from insane heights, and hear sounds you can only imagine. She’s no ordinary schoolteacher…she’s The Bionic Woman.”

The release of the Bionic Woman on DVD has been bounced around for some time now. Much like other older classics like the 1960’s Batman, and the more recent Earth: Final Conflict, The Bionic Woman series was stuck in a legal battle over ownership. What frustrated most fans was that the series was available overseas for years and often found on eBay, but in a format not compatible with US DVD players.

The Bionic Woman series lasted 3 seasons, and follows the adventures of super agent Jaime Sommers (played by Lindsay Wagner), one of TVs earliest strong female action hero figures. It was originally a spin-off of The Six Million Dollar Man (which finally comes out as a set in November), but it easily gained a life and strong following of its own, even breaking ratings of its predecessor.

Although the original does not have as many special effects as the failed remake, it does have a much better storyline and Lindsay Wagner’s acting abilities really kept viewers engaged. While campy at times, it was not a hard story to follow. The Bionic Woman was also an inspiration to other fantasy writers, as it was becoming increasingly harder to ignore how people were drawn to a super intelligent and super strong female television character leads like The Bionic Woman, but let’s not forget JoAnna Cameron as Isis (The Secrets of Isis – 1975), Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman (1975), Yvonne Craig as Batgirl (1967), and perhaps most importantly Nichelle Nichols as Uhura (Star Trek 1966)!
